ABOUT THE ART
Formal Analysis

Spirit Beasts expands Vũ's sacred-animal vocabulary onto a monumental 200 x 200 cm square canvas. Instead of isolating one creature, the painting combines multiple linh thú within a single geographic and symbolic structure. Vũ assigns the Four Sacred Creatures to different extremes of Vietnam: the Qilin to the mountainous north, the Dragon to the western landscape, the Turtle to the south, and the Phoenix toward the eastern sunrise. Because the work is square rather than panoramic, these distant territories are compressed toward a common center. The composition therefore behaves simultaneously as mythic image and conceptual map. Animal forms, landscape references, and national geography are made to share one pictorial field, turning scale and spatial organization into essential parts of the painting's meaning.

Giao Analysis

Spirit Beasts synthesizes sacred-animal imagery in Vietnamese culture from the Lý dynasty to the present while mapping the Four Sacred Creatures onto the geography of the modern nation. Vũ places the Qilin in relation to the mountains of Hà Giang, the Dragon with the western terrain around Pha Đin and A Pa Chải, the Turtle in the south, and the Phoenix in the east facing sunrise. The forms converge toward the 17th parallel, a location charged by the twentieth-century history of national division and reunification. Giao can therefore read the work across several time scales at once: dynastic sacred imagery, inherited East Asian cosmology, regional Vietnamese landscapes, and modern political geography. The painting turns linh thú into a framework for imagining national continuity, showing how ancient symbols can be reorganized to speak to the shape and historical memory of contemporary Vietnam.

Nguyễn Thanh Vũ (b. 1995) is a Vietnamese artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. Trained in architecture at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, he shifted from architecture toward painting in 2021. That background remains visible in his attention to structure, spatial rhythm, and the way cultural symbols occupy a composition. Working primarily in oil, and also in ceramic, Vũ pursues a Post-Impressionist approach in which color, texture, and emotional force take precedence over strict naturalism.

His practice develops along two connected paths. One revisits Vietnamese architecture, history, belief, and sacred-animal imagery through projects such as Kỳ Ẩn Việt Nam (2022) and Từ Tính Tứ Linh (2024), developed through archival research and field study in Vietnam and neighboring regions. The other uses waves, clouds, light, and cyclical movement as vehicles for inner states, including Into The Unknown (2025), which relates the changing phases of a day to stages of human life and incorporates Buddhist mudra imagery. Across both directions, Vũ treats painting as a way to reactivate inherited cultural memory and translate it into a contemporary visual experience rather than preserve it as a fixed image of the past.
