ABOUT THE ART
Formal Analysis

Golden Turtle is organized around weight and support. The turtle forms the structural base of the vertical composition, while the scripture and stone stele it carries create an upward hierarchy of animal, text, and monument. The shell becomes both a bodily form and an architectural mass, giving the creature a sense of stability that corresponds to the symbolic meaning described by the artist. Vũ's dense oil surface and repeated patterning prevent the turtle from reading as simple naturalism. The animal belongs to a layered visual field in which shell, ornament, written knowledge, and surrounding texture reinforce one another. The composition turns the act of bearing weight into the painting's formal logic, making endurance physically visible through the relationship between the grounded body and the vertical burden above it.

Giao Analysis

Golden Turtle brings several Vietnamese symbolic traditions into one image. Vũ notes the turtle's associations with longevity, stability, and endurance, while some minority cosmologies compare the animal's domed shell, flat underside, and legs to the roof, floor, and columns of a stilt house, linking the body of the turtle to the relationship between sky and earth. He also draws on the stele-bearing tortoises of Văn Miếu, whose forms changed across historical periods. In this painting, Kim Quy carries scripture beneath the stone stele, turning knowledge and wisdom into a literal burden. Giao reads the work as a meeting point between folk cosmology, scholarly tradition, architecture, sacred-animal imagery, and contemporary painting. The turtle becomes a carrier of accumulated cultural memory as well as physical weight.

Nguyễn Thanh Vũ (b. 1995) is a Vietnamese artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. Trained in architecture at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, he shifted from architecture toward painting in 2021. That background remains visible in his attention to structure, spatial rhythm, and the way cultural symbols occupy a composition. Working primarily in oil, and also in ceramic, Vũ pursues a Post-Impressionist approach in which color, texture, and emotional force take precedence over strict naturalism.

His practice develops along two connected paths. One revisits Vietnamese architecture, history, belief, and sacred-animal imagery through projects such as Kỳ Ẩn Việt Nam (2022) and Từ Tính Tứ Linh (2024), developed through archival research and field study in Vietnam and neighboring regions. The other uses waves, clouds, light, and cyclical movement as vehicles for inner states, including Into The Unknown (2025), which relates the changing phases of a day to stages of human life and incorporates Buddhist mudra imagery. Across both directions, Vũ treats painting as a way to reactivate inherited cultural memory and translate it into a contemporary visual experience rather than preserve it as a fixed image of the past.
