ABOUT THE ART
Formal Analysis

Garuda uses a square 60 x 60 cm support that gives the sacred bird a compact, emblematic presence. Rather than treating the creature as an ordinary bird study, Vũ builds the image around its mythic identity, allowing the body, wings, and surrounding painterly field to operate as a single concentration of force. The square format suppresses the extended narrative space of a conventional landscape and instead emphasizes centrality, balance, and iconic presence. Vũ's oil technique places the creature within an active surface rather than separating it cleanly from the background, so the Garuda appears less like a specimen than a form emerging from energy and color. The painting's formal strength comes from that compression of anatomy, symbol, and painterly motion.

Giao Analysis

Garuda is one of the clearest examples of cultural transmission in Vũ's Từ Tính Tứ Linh project. The artist explicitly traces the sacred bird through Hindu, Buddhist, Thai, Chinese, and Japanese traditions. In Hinduism, Garuda is the king of birds and the vehicle of Vishnu, associated with courage and immense power. Within Buddhism, the figure is absorbed into the Eight Legions of divine protectors and becomes associated with light, courage, and unwavering will. Vũ also points to the strength of Garuda imagery in Cham sculpture, where the trans-Asian deity acquired a distinct regional material form. Giao can therefore follow a symbol moving from South Asian religion through Buddhist networks and Southeast Asian kingdoms into Vietnamese and Cham visual culture, before being reinterpreted again as contemporary oil painting.

Nguyễn Thanh Vũ (b. 1995) is a Vietnamese artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. Trained in architecture at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, he shifted from architecture toward painting in 2021. That background remains visible in his attention to structure, spatial rhythm, and the way cultural symbols occupy a composition. Working primarily in oil, and also in ceramic, Vũ pursues a Post-Impressionist approach in which color, texture, and emotional force take precedence over strict naturalism.

His practice develops along two connected paths. One revisits Vietnamese architecture, history, belief, and sacred-animal imagery through projects such as Kỳ Ẩn Việt Nam (2022) and Từ Tính Tứ Linh (2024), developed through archival research and field study in Vietnam and neighboring regions. The other uses waves, clouds, light, and cyclical movement as vehicles for inner states, including Into The Unknown (2025), which relates the changing phases of a day to stages of human life and incorporates Buddhist mudra imagery. Across both directions, Vũ treats painting as a way to reactivate inherited cultural memory and translate it into a contemporary visual experience rather than preserve it as a fixed image of the past.
