ABOUT THE ART
Formal Analysis

Báo Thiên Tower compresses a monumental architectural subject into a small vertical format. The tower functions as the composition's primary axis, giving the painting the structural clarity expected from an artist trained in architecture, but Vũ refuses the neutral palette and measured distance of an archaeological reconstruction. The monument is absorbed into a dense oil surface and a heightened field of color, where broken brushwork and shifting tonal passages make stone, atmosphere, and light feel active rather than fixed. The result moves between architectural study and memory image. The building remains legible as a constructed form, yet the Post-Impressionist color and expressive handling prevent it from reading as documentary illustration. That tension between structural precision and chromatic invention is central to the work.

Giao Analysis

Giao reads Báo Thiên Tower as an act of cultural reconstruction. The original tower was built under Lý Thánh Tông in 1057 and became remembered as one of the An Nam Tứ Đại Khí, but the monument itself no longer survives intact. Vũ therefore cannot simply paint what stands before him. He works through historical records, architectural knowledge, surviving cultural memory, and his own pictorial interpretation. A medieval Buddhist monument passes through text and collective remembrance before being translated into a contemporary Post-Impressionist oil painting. The work does not claim to recover an untouched original. Instead, it makes visible how heritage survives through repeated acts of interpretation, allowing architecture, Buddhist history, national memory, and modern painting to occupy the same image.

Academic Artist

Nguyễn Thanh Vũ (b. 1995) is a Vietnamese artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. Trained in architecture at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, he shifted from architecture toward painting in 2021. That background remains visible in his attention to structure, spatial rhythm, and the way cultural symbols occupy a composition. Working primarily in oil, and also in ceramic, Vũ pursues a Post-Impressionist approach in which color, texture, and emotional force take precedence over strict naturalism.

His practice develops along two connected paths. One revisits Vietnamese architecture, history, belief, and sacred-animal imagery through projects such as Kỳ Ẩn Việt Nam (2022) and Từ Tính Tứ Linh (2024), developed through archival research and field study in Vietnam and neighboring regions. The other uses waves, clouds, light, and cyclical movement as vehicles for inner states, including Into The Unknown (2025), which relates the changing phases of a day to stages of human life and incorporates Buddhist mudra imagery. Across both directions, Vũ treats painting as a way to reactivate inherited cultural memory and translate it into a contemporary visual experience rather than preserve it as a fixed image of the past.
