ABOUT THE ART
Formal Analysis

See the Sea treats the ocean less as a fixed horizon than as a field of movement. Across the 60 x 80 cm oil painting, Vũ uses active brushwork and broken passages of color to give the water a physical rhythm, allowing the surface to feel in motion even within a contained composition. The seascape belongs to his Sunrise and Sunset group, where changing light becomes inseparable from the experience of landscape. Rather than describing every wave naturalistically, the painting condenses sea, atmosphere, and light into larger directional masses. That simplification shifts the work away from marine illustration and toward an emotional landscape in which the viewer encounters the sea through the painter's handling of energy, color, and surface.

Giao Analysis

See the Sea belongs to a modern Vietnamese landscape tradition formed through the encounter between local experience and oil painting, a medium institutionalized in Vietnam through twentieth-century art education and then repeatedly adapted by Vietnamese artists. Vũ uses that imported medium without treating the landscape according to European academic naturalism. The sea is filtered through a personal Post-Impressionist language that emphasizes sensation, changing light, and emotional energy. Giao can therefore connect the work to the broader history of Vietnamese artists absorbing Western oil technique while reshaping it around their own environments and visual priorities. The cultural exchange is embedded in the method itself: a globally circulating medium becomes a vehicle for a locally experienced relationship to sea and light.

Nguyễn Thanh Vũ (b. 1995) is a Vietnamese artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. Trained in architecture at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, he shifted from architecture toward painting in 2021. That background remains visible in his attention to structure, spatial rhythm, and the way cultural symbols occupy a composition. Working primarily in oil, and also in ceramic, Vũ pursues a Post-Impressionist approach in which color, texture, and emotional force take precedence over strict naturalism.

His practice develops along two connected paths. One revisits Vietnamese architecture, history, belief, and sacred-animal imagery through projects such as Kỳ Ẩn Việt Nam (2022) and Từ Tính Tứ Linh (2024), developed through archival research and field study in Vietnam and neighboring regions. The other uses waves, clouds, light, and cyclical movement as vehicles for inner states, including Into The Unknown (2025), which relates the changing phases of a day to stages of human life and incorporates Buddhist mudra imagery. Across both directions, Vũ treats painting as a way to reactivate inherited cultural memory and translate it into a contemporary visual experience rather than preserve it as a fixed image of the past.
