ABOUT THE ART
Formal Analysis

Reflecting uses a vertical 60 x 80 cm format to organize the landscape around repetition and visual echo. The reflective element allows forms above and below the surface to answer one another without becoming exact duplicates, creating a tension between recognition and distortion. Vũ's broken oil handling keeps reflected forms unstable, so the image is structured through shifts in texture, direction, and light rather than through a perfectly mirrored symmetry. This makes reflection function as more than an optical effect. It becomes the painting's compositional device, allowing solid forms to dissolve into a second, less stable version of themselves and turning the landscape into an investigation of how perception changes when an image is repeated through water and light.

Giao Analysis

Giao reads Reflecting through a recurring concern in East and Southeast Asian visual culture: the use of water as both physical space and a metaphor for perception, impermanence, and doubled reality. Vũ does not present those ideas through traditional ink conventions or explicit religious symbols. Instead, he works through oil paint and a Post-Impressionist emphasis on broken color and subjective vision. The reflected image is therefore both an observed natural phenomenon and a modern painterly problem. The work connects an older cultural sensitivity to water, change, and unstable appearances with a Western-derived medium that foregrounds the individual artist's perception. Its syncretism occurs through the act of seeing: reflection becomes the point where inherited ideas about change meet modern expressive painting.

Academic Artist

Nguyễn Thanh Vũ (b. 1995) is a Vietnamese artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. Trained in architecture at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, he shifted from architecture toward painting in 2021. That background remains visible in his attention to structure, spatial rhythm, and the way cultural symbols occupy a composition. Working primarily in oil, and also in ceramic, Vũ pursues a Post-Impressionist approach in which color, texture, and emotional force take precedence over strict naturalism.

His practice develops along two connected paths. One revisits Vietnamese architecture, history, belief, and sacred-animal imagery through projects such as Kỳ Ẩn Việt Nam (2022) and Từ Tính Tứ Linh (2024), developed through archival research and field study in Vietnam and neighboring regions. The other uses waves, clouds, light, and cyclical movement as vehicles for inner states, including Into The Unknown (2025), which relates the changing phases of a day to stages of human life and incorporates Buddhist mudra imagery. Across both directions, Vũ treats painting as a way to reactivate inherited cultural memory and translate it into a contemporary visual experience rather than preserve it as a fixed image of the past.
