ABOUT THE ART
Formal Analysis

Nirvana is a 60 cm circular oil painting in which the movement of water carries the main formal structure. Rather than presenting waves as a conventional seascape, Vũ interweaves their curves with two Buddhist mudras, the gesture associated with release from suffering and the Abhaya mudra, a sign of fearlessness. The gestures are not placed on top of the image as separate symbols. They are absorbed into the same directional flow as the water, so hand form and wave form repeatedly approach and dissolve into one another. The circular support intensifies this sense of recurrence, removing a fixed horizon and encouraging the eye to follow continuous movement around and through the composition. The work therefore depends on transformation of form: water becomes gesture, gesture becomes rhythm, and symbolic meaning is carried by the painting's movement rather than by isolated iconography.

Giao Analysis

Nirvana draws directly on Buddhist symbolic language while translating it into Vũ's contemporary vocabulary of waves and cyclical motion. The artist combines the mudra associated with release from suffering with the Abhaya mudra, the gesture of fearlessness, embedding both within the water rather than depicting a Buddha figure. That choice shifts Buddhist iconography from a devotional body into an elemental landscape. Giao reads the work as a form of cultural and visual translation: an inherited religious gesture remains recognizable in principle, but its physical form is redistributed through contemporary oil painting and the artist's recurring image of the sea. The work's theme of impermanence is reinforced by that transformation. The symbol itself refuses to remain fixed, appearing through the same moving water that suggests change, endurance, and release.

Nguyễn Thanh Vũ (b. 1995) is a Vietnamese artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. Trained in architecture at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, he shifted from architecture toward painting in 2021. That background remains visible in his attention to structure, spatial rhythm, and the way cultural symbols occupy a composition. Working primarily in oil, and also in ceramic, Vũ pursues a Post-Impressionist approach in which color, texture, and emotional force take precedence over strict naturalism.

His practice develops along two connected paths. One revisits Vietnamese architecture, history, belief, and sacred-animal imagery through projects such as Kỳ Ẩn Việt Nam (2022) and Từ Tính Tứ Linh (2024), developed through archival research and field study in Vietnam and neighboring regions. The other uses waves, clouds, light, and cyclical movement as vehicles for inner states, including Into The Unknown (2025), which relates the changing phases of a day to stages of human life and incorporates Buddhist mudra imagery. Across both directions, Vũ treats painting as a way to reactivate inherited cultural memory and translate it into a contemporary visual experience rather than preserve it as a fixed image of the past.
