ABOUT THE ART
Formal Analysis

Serenity belongs to Vũ's Into The Unknown cycle, where waves, clouds, and changing light replace the fixed architectural and animal subjects of his earlier series. The horizontal 80 x 120 cm format allows the composition to unfold as an atmospheric field rather than a single emblem. Layered oil marks suggest natural movement without resolving into conventional landscape description, keeping water, cloud, air, and light visually porous. The painting's structure depends on transitions rather than hard edges, so motion is present without becoming violent or directional. Within a series built around the stages of a day and a human life, the work uses the physical behavior of paint to make stillness feel temporary and alive, a state reached within movement rather than outside it.

Giao Analysis

An Nhiên names a condition of ease, composure, and inner steadiness, but Vũ places that idea inside a larger cycle modeled on one day and one human life. Into The Unknown pairs natural phenomena such as waves, clouds, dawn, dusk, and changing light with stages of growth, uncertainty, decline, and renewal. The series also incorporates Buddhist mudra imagery and a Buddhist-inflected understanding of impermanence without functioning as literal religious illustration. Giao reads Serenity as a contemporary translation of those inherited ideas into atmospheric painting. Rather than depicting a Buddha, temple, or scripture, the work allows movement in nature to carry philosophical meaning. Calm becomes not an escape from change but a way of inhabiting change.

Academic Artist

Nguyễn Thanh Vũ (b. 1995) is a Vietnamese artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. Trained in architecture at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, he shifted from architecture toward painting in 2021. That background remains visible in his attention to structure, spatial rhythm, and the way cultural symbols occupy a composition. Working primarily in oil, and also in ceramic, Vũ pursues a Post-Impressionist approach in which color, texture, and emotional force take precedence over strict naturalism.

His practice develops along two connected paths. One revisits Vietnamese architecture, history, belief, and sacred-animal imagery through projects such as Kỳ Ẩn Việt Nam (2022) and Từ Tính Tứ Linh (2024), developed through archival research and field study in Vietnam and neighboring regions. The other uses waves, clouds, light, and cyclical movement as vehicles for inner states, including Into The Unknown (2025), which relates the changing phases of a day to stages of human life and incorporates Buddhist mudra imagery. Across both directions, Vũ treats painting as a way to reactivate inherited cultural memory and translate it into a contemporary visual experience rather than preserve it as a fixed image of the past.
