ABOUT THE ART
Formal Analysis

Meditation is a circular oil painting structured around inward movement. Vũ describes the wave forms as being modeled on the shape of a meditation mudra, with the water curling toward the center while the silhouette of a seated meditator appears and disappears within the composition. The circular support reinforces that centripetal motion, removing the directional hierarchy of a conventional rectangular landscape and turning the image into a contained field of repetition, rhythm, and concentration. Water is therefore doing more than representing nature. Its motion becomes a visual analogue for controlled attention, with the repeated curves of the waves drawing the eye inward toward stillness. The painting balances movement and calm by allowing the surface to remain active while the overall structure remains centered and self-contained.

Giao Analysis

Meditation belongs to Vũ's Into The Unknown cycle, where the phases of a day are mapped onto stages of a human life. The artist places this work between 9 p.m. and midnight, corresponding to old age, reflection, slowing activity, and preparation for the final sleep. The imagery also transforms a Buddhist meditation mudra into the movement of water, while the seated figure is embedded within rather than separated from the waves. Giao can trace several forms of translation here: Buddhist hand symbolism becomes landscape, meditation becomes bodily rhythm, and a spiritual practice becomes part of a contemporary oil-painting language. The work does not illustrate doctrine literally. It reworks inherited Buddhist imagery through natural motion and modern pictorial form, allowing philosophical meaning to emerge through the structure of the painting itself.

Nguyễn Thanh Vũ (b. 1995) is a Vietnamese artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. Trained in architecture at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, he shifted from architecture toward painting in 2021. That background remains visible in his attention to structure, spatial rhythm, and the way cultural symbols occupy a composition. Working primarily in oil, and also in ceramic, Vũ pursues a Post-Impressionist approach in which color, texture, and emotional force take precedence over strict naturalism.

His practice develops along two connected paths. One revisits Vietnamese architecture, history, belief, and sacred-animal imagery through projects such as Kỳ Ẩn Việt Nam (2022) and Từ Tính Tứ Linh (2024), developed through archival research and field study in Vietnam and neighboring regions. The other uses waves, clouds, light, and cyclical movement as vehicles for inner states, including Into The Unknown (2025), which relates the changing phases of a day to stages of human life and incorporates Buddhist mudra imagery. Across both directions, Vũ treats painting as a way to reactivate inherited cultural memory and translate it into a contemporary visual experience rather than preserve it as a fixed image of the past.
